Sometimes it's hard to
find words to pray. Whether we're grieving or distracted, with others or
alone, it's helpful to join prayers that have been offered for years by the
people who belong to God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Here are prayers from
Scripture and classic prayers from believers through the centuries—some
you'll recognize, others will be new to you. Don't discount the ones that
seem familiar. Pray them carefully and you may find that the truth that
seemed so predictable will be the very thing that engages your heart.
I hope they can help
you express yourself to the Lord, who knows our hearts apart from the words
we form.
PRAYERS FROM SCRIPTURE
In the morning, O
Lord, you hear my voice;
In the morning, I lay my requests before you
and wait in expectation.
Psalm 5:3
And Jabez called
on the God of Israel saying,
"Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory,
that Your hand would be with me,
and that You would keep me from evil,
that I may not cause pain!"
So God granted him what he requested.
1 Chronicles 4:10
For He will
command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
"Because he loves me," says the Lord,
"I will rescue him; I will protect him,
for he acknowledges my name.
He will call upon me and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation.
Psalm 91:11-16
Our Father in
heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
Matthew 7:11-13
For this reason,
ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus
and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for
you,
remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and
revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of
your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which
he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and
his incomparably great power for us who believe.
Ephesians 1:15-19
I pray that out of
his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power
through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your
hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established
in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and
long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that
surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the
fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we
ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be
glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever
and ever! Amen.
Ephesians 3:16-21
For this reason,
since the day we heard about you, we have not
stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge
of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:9
With this in mind,
we constantly pray for you, that our God may
count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill
every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith.
We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you,
and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus
Christ.
2 Thessalonians 1:11-12
O LORD, you have
searched me and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

My frame was not hidden from you

All the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.
When I awake,I am still with you.
If only you would slay the wicked, O God!
Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!
They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.
Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD,
and abhor those who rise up against you?
I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139
Have mercy on me,
O God, according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your
sight,
so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you
judge. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother
conceived me. Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me
wisdom in the inmost place.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within
me.
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.
Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
the God who saves me,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
O Lord, open my lips,and my mouth will declare your praise.
You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.
In your good pleasure make Zion prosper;
build up the walls of Jerusalem.
Then there will be righteous sacrifices,
whole burnt offerings to delight you;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

He descended into hell;
the third day He arose again from the dead;
